Library District Board Trustee — Your local library district within DuPage County

Filing Fee: No filing fee Term: 6-year terms — no term limits Seats: 7-member board, typically 2–3 seats up per election cycle Election: April 6, 2027

⚠️ The 1-year residency requirement is stricter than most other local offices. If you recently moved into the area, check how long you've been in the district before filing.

Public library districts in DuPage County are governed by elected boards of 7 trustees. Trustees set the library's budget, approve hiring of the library director, and make policy decisions about services, collections, and facilities. These boards have real governing authority — and most people don't know they're elected at all.

Who Can Run

Be at least 18 years old
Be a U.S. citizen and a registered voter in your library district
Have lived in your library district for at least 1 full year before the filing deadline
Have no outstanding debts owed to the library district (including unpaid taxes)

📋 What You Need to File

Confirm your library district by calling (630) 407-5600 (DuPage County Clerk) or contacting your local library directly.
Contact the library district secretary to get the official petition packet and find out the exact number of signatures you need. It could be as few as 6–10 signatures — almost certainly fewer than 50.
Starting around August 24, 2026, collect signatures from registered voters in your library district.
File your notarized Statement of Candidacy and petition papers with the library district secretary during the filing window (estimated November 16–23, 2026).
File a Statement of Economic Interests.
Register a political committee with the Illinois State Board of Elections only if you raise or spend more than $5,000 (most library board candidates spend nothing or very little).
